ok, I tried, the textured water is really great, they must use the environment mapping, so cool....
however, I have a problem that if I enable the background soud, all I hear is loud broken sound, sounds like a continuous machine gun shoot....very annoy!! and then I quit the program, WinXP report there's an error and ask me to report to MS (as usual)
AppName: living pond.scr AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: living pond.scr
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0001e78c
The program living pond.scr has encounter a problem, it must be terminated, we apologise any inconvenience
.....sigh.....
anyway...the graphic display is amazing but it requires to much CPU and works a bit slow on my system.....
I'll try more..
my sound card is on board type CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Decice with Driver version 5.12.1.639

in addition, the scene cycle time is too short and CANNOT be adjusted(or can it in registered version? I dont' see any document about that), it's quite annoy that you just use the number keys to adjust the view angle to the right position you want and the scene changed into another angle.......darn.... |

 |

The new view system with cycling and preset views was just implemented and added to the 1.0rc8 version released yesterday, so please understand we are in the process of adding features to it over the next week or so. Unfortunately, it looks like rc8 also introduced a few choice bugs to what was previously a fairly stable release (rc7).
The ability to set cycle time is already on the planned feature list.
This new view system replaced our previous system which is still there as the "User View" mode - press 0 to set the Living Pond to User View mode, and you can choose any view you want, and it will always spawn to that view when restarted.
The error you mentioned is news to me as well - sounds like a new bug introduced by the changes we made to the "nag screen" window in this version. We didn't observe it on any of our test machines, but I've noticed these kinds of crasher bugs can be fairly insidious and quite particular to individual computers, versions of DLLs installed, etc. Luckily, I think I know what's causing it, and I'll make sure it gets addressed in the next version, which will hopefully be up later today or tomorrow.
The broken background sound is also a bug we've never heard reported before - the background sound in general doesn't work currently on Win98 and that's a known problem, but I've never heard anybody report this. I'll look into what might cause that problem. Sounds like a DirectMusic issue on your machine - we definitely don't do anything low level sound-wise, so I can't imagine why this would occur.
Thanks for the feedback, and we'll get these issues with our new version ironed out very soon.

We are currently trying to track this one down. Can you tell us what kind of sound card you have? Also what OS?
Thanks!

I think I've figured out the problem here. I believe it has to do with some people's computer's having different versions of the MP3 "codec" installed in Windows (this could have been installed by any number of other video playback or multimedia applications) and the difference in behavior between the standard MP3 codec and other MP3 codecs under the DirectShow part of DirectX.
I am working on a fix, trying to eliminate any of the assumptions the code was making before that seemed to work for us, but not on everybody's PC.

Hi James,
I was hoping you could test out a new version to see if the sound problems have gone away. It's not on our download page yet because I am trying to get some people who've had sound problems to try it out first and see if it resolves the problems. You can download it at https://screengardens.com/download/LivingPond_1.01.exe. Let me know when you get a chance to try it out, I'm very curious to see whether the new sound code fixes the problem or not. Others who've had sound problems are welcome to try it as well and leave feedback here...
Thanks!

I just tried this version on my brother's computer....to my surprise, no luck, the annoy maching gun still there, I was expecting the music since my brother's computer is different from mine, different motherboard and different onboard sound card, his sound card is called:
VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller
After press the Esc, the same application faliure dislog came up with same error offset.
so sad to tell you this |

I've just downloaded and tried your latest version of Living Pond, and I get exactly the same results as James. Sounds as if I'm in the middle of a gunfight.
The sound however is not coming from my stereo speakers, but directly from my PC. If I do turn off the background sound in settings , it nevertheless does silence it.
